Francisco Bayeu y Subías (Saragoça, 9 de março de 1734 — Madri, 4 de agosto de 1795) foi um pintor espanhol, cunhado de Francisco de Goya. Seu estilo era um misto de rococó francês com o classicismo acadêmico de Mengs.

Bayeu criou afrescos para a Catedral de Nossa Senhora do Pilar e de Toledo; fora nomeado pintor da corte de Carlos III em 1767 e decorou os palácio reais de Madri, La Granja, El Pardo e Aranjuez.

Casablanca é um filme estadunidense de 1942, do gênero drama romântico, dirigido por Michael Curtiz, estrelado por Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman e Paul Henreid. O roteiro é baseado em peça teatral de Murray Burnett e Joan Alison. É considerado por muitos como um dos melhores filmes de todos os tempos.

A cidade de Casablanca, então localizada no Marrocos governado pela França de Vichy, era o penúltimo ponto na rota à América. Os refugiados que ali residiam necessitavam de um visto (Letter of transit) para Portugal, e apenas em Lisboa embarcariam em um navio para o Novo Mundo. E um dos locais de encontro era o bar Rick´s. Seu dono, Rick Blaine, é um homem que tenta não se envolver com a política, pois seu estabelecimento é frequentado por todos os tipos de clientes, como nazistas, aliados e ladrões, entre outros. Rick também é amigo do corrupto Capitão Renault.

Um dia um major alemão vai a Casablanca em busca de um ladrão que havia roubado duas letter of transit. O casal que necessitava destes documentos para sua fuga à América era Ilsa Lund e Victor Lazlo, importante líder da resistência tcheca. Rick e Ilsa se encontram e relembram o passado que tiveram juntos. Na tela, a música imortal deste relacionamento (As time goes by) é interpretada por Sam.

Mrs. Miniver (Rosa da Esperança) é um filme estadunidense de 1942, do gênero drama de guerra, dirigido por William Wyler.

Baseia-se numa fictícia dona-de-casa britânica criada por Jan Struther em 1937 para um série de colunas do jornal The Times. Venceu seis prêmios Oscar, incluindo o de melhor filme do ano.

A adaptação cinematográfica da homônima série de colunas criada por Jan Struther para o jornal foi produzida pela Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer em 1942. Sob a influência do Departamento de Informação de Guerra, o filme tenta descontruir a imagem da Inglaterra glamourosa que era passada pelos filmes de Hollywood do período pré-guerra. Para esse propósito, o status social elevado da família Miniver retratado nas colunas foi degradado e maior atenção foi dada à erosão de barreiras entre classes durante o período da guerra.

Apesar de não tão rica quanto nas publicações de Struther, a Sra. Miniver da versão cinematográfica ainda vive na confortável casa intitulada Starlings; não no centro de Londres, mas num subúrbio perto do Tâmisa. Mrs. Kay Miniver (Greer Garson) and her family live a comfortable life at a house called 'Starlings' in a village outside London. The house has a large garden, with a private landing stage on the river Thames, and a motorboat. Her husband Clem (Canadian-born actor Walter Pidgeon) is a successful architect. They have three children: the youngsters Toby and Judy (Christopher Severn and Clare Sandars), and an older son Vin (Richard Ney) at university. They have live-in staff: Gladys the housemaid (Brenda Forbes) and Ada the cook (Marie De Becker).

As World War II looms, Vin comes down from university and meets Carol Beldon (Teresa Wright), granddaughter of Lady Beldon (Dame May Whitty) from nearby Beldon Hall. Despite initial disagreements, mainly contrasting Vin's idealistic attitude to class differences with Carol's practical altruism, they fall in love. Vin proposes to Carol at a yacht club dinner-dance. They eventually marry, but as the war comes closer to home, Vin feels he must 'do his bit' and enlists in the Royal Air Force qualifying as a fighter pilot. He is posted to a base near to his parents' home.

Together with other boat owners, Clem volunteers to take his motorboat to assist in the Dunkirk evacuation.

Early one morning, Kay hears a plane crash nearby. The wounded, fanatical German pilot (Helmut Dantine) hides in her garden and then holds her at gunpoint. She feeds him, calmly disarms him and then calls the police. Soon after, Clem comes home.

After the flower show's competition, in which the entry of Mr Ballard, the local stationmaster (Henry Travers), named the 'Mrs. Miniver' rose, is declared the winner over Lady Beldon's rose, Kay and Carol drive Vin to join his squadron just as an air attack begins. On their return home, Kay stops the car; Carol is wounded in an attack from a German plane. She dies a few minutes after they reach home. Kay is devastated. When Vin returns from battle, he is told the terrible news.

Federico Barocci (Urbino, 1528 - 1612) foi um pintor, gravador e impressor italiano da Contra-Reforma ou do proto-Barroco. Seu nome original era Federico Fiori e seu apelido Il Baroccio.

Nasceu em Urbino, Itália, e teve suas primeiras lições com o seu pai, Ambrogio Barocci, um escultor de importância local. Tornou-se mais tarde aprendiz de Battista Franco, em Urbino. O início de sua carreira em Roma teve como mentor Taddeo Zuccari e seu tio Bartolomeo Genga, e começou após uma jornada com este último até à cidade. Em Roma, trabalhou com Federico Zuccari várias vezes.

Após uma estadia de quatro anos em Roma, retornou à sua cidade nativa, onde o seu primeiro trabalho foi uma Santa Margarida, executada para a Confraternidade do Sagrado Sacramento. Foi convidado a retornar a Roma pelo Papa Pio IV, para assistir a decoração do Palácio Belvedere, no Vaticano, onde pintou a Virgem Maria e o infante, com vários santos a rodearem as personagem principais. Realizou também um fresco da Anunciação. Ficou doente e temeu ter sido envenenado por artistas rivais. Sempre reclamou de ter uma saúde frágil, mas permaneceu produtivo por quatro décadas ou mais.

Deixou Roma em 1563. Suas pinturas são vivas e brilhantes. Nunca mais retornou a Roma, e trabalhava principalmente em Urbino, na corte Ducal.
Apesar de não estar em Roma, continuou a ser inovador em seu estilo. Seus desenhos com pastel / giz são talvez as obras mais antigas nessa técnica, mesmo antes de Correggio. Tinha uma técnica e um processo especial para executar os altares, que incluía esboços de várias formas. Hoje, ainda existem mais de 2.000 desenhos feitos pelo artista. Um exemplo de sua técnica pode ser vista na Madonna del Popolo, um quadro de grande complexidade, originado pela grande variedade de poses, perspectivas, detalhes naturais, luz e efeitos atmosféricos. Existem vários esboços originais da Madonna del Popolo.

Frederico Barocci, (dit Barocci ou Baroccio, ou encore Fiori da Urbino), en français le Baroche (Urbino, 1535 - Urbino, 1612) est un peintre italien maniériste du XVIe et du début du XVIIe siècle, l'un des précurseurs du baroque.

Federico Barocci est originaire d'une famille lombarde qui avait déjà produit plusieurs artistes distingués. Il se forme d'abord par l'étude des tableaux de Raphaël et du Titien, puis prend plus tard, Daniele da Volterra, les Vénitiens et Corrège pour modèles (Madone du peuple, 1574).

Appelé à Rome par Pie IV, il exécute pour ce pape plusieurs grands ouvrages de peinture au palais du Belvédère (Histoire de Moïse, 1563). Pendant son séjour à Rome, quelques peintres jaloux de ses succès, tentent de l'empoisonner, alors qu'il n'a que 32 ans. Les soins qu'il reçoit aussitôt l'arrachent à la mort, mais sa santé en sera profondément altérée pour le reste de ses jours. Il vit cependant encore longtemps et a pu produire d'autres chefs-d'œuvre. Il meurt à Urbino en 1612, à 84 ans.

Barocci was born in Urbino in central Italy into a family of artists, who provided his early training: Battista Franco and Bartolomeo Genga, his uncle. Apart from two trips to Rome early in his career was based there all his life, painting numerous altarpieces there and in the surrounding towns.

Barocci acted as the linchpin that joined the great masters of the sixteenth century with the new art, from Carracci to Guido Reni, that was to emerge in the next century. Barocci trained in his native Urbino with its incredible artistic legacy. Around 1550 he visited Rome briefly to discover and study the work of Raphael, also a native of Urbino. He seems to have been particularly conscious of Raphael's contribution to his own style.

Barocci was also strongly influenced by the compositions of other painters: Daniele da Volterra, the Venetians, and specifically Italian painter Correggio who by his painterly approach, which de-emphasized the hard outlines of objects. From his earliest work he incorporated Correggio's sunny grace enriched with his personal and warm taste for Venetian colour. He moved beyond the linear style of his teacher Battista Franco around 1563, when he discovered Correggio's sfumato effects, which made the defining lines of forms appear to dissolve into delicately colored, smoky mists. His works consist mainly of religious paintings, which combine the influence of Correggio and Raphael in a highly individual and sensitive manner.

In 1560 he went again to Rome, to work on a ceiling fresco for Pope Pius IV's Casino in the Vatican gardens. Barocci's decorations for the Casino used Correggio's sfumato technique, and he became so celebrated that they established his reputation as an up-and-coming young painter. But in 1563, before he had finished the project, Barocci fell ill; he is said to have abandoned his frescos for fear that rivals were trying to poison him, and returned to Urbino for good, working only two hours a day due to constant pain. The hypersensitive temperament this suggests comes out in his work.

How Green Was My Valley (Como era verde o meu vale) é um filme estadunidense de 1941, do gênero drama, dirigido por John Ford e com roteiro baseado no romance de mesmo nome de Richard Llewellyn.

Aos 60 anos, Huw Morgan relembra sua vida quando garoto em uma pequena cidade mineradora do País de Gales no início do século XX. Suas lembranças revelam a desintegração da sua família, seus sentimentos e os problemas daqueles tempos.

Huw Morgan vive sua infância na cidade mineradora de Rhondda Valley com seus pais, quatro irmãos e uma irmã. Todos os homens da família são trabalhadores nas minas de carvão. Devido ao fechamento de uma indústria metalúrgica, muitos operários desempregados vão para as minas e aceitam pagamentos menores, o que diminui os salários em geral e leva a que os trabalhadores entrem em greve e, depois, formem um sindicato. A irmã de Huw, Angharad, se apaixona pelo pastor recém-chegado à cidade. Apesar de correspondida, o pastor prefere permanecer fiel à Igreja e ela acaba casando com o filho do proprietário da mina. As dificuldades no trabalho continuam e dois dos irmãos de Huw resolvem emigrar para a América. Huw vai para uma escola em outra cidade e sofre com os alunos esnobes e um professor autoritário.

A intenção dos produtores era realizar as filmagens no País de Gales, mas isso não foi possível por causa da Segunda Guerra Mundial.

O filme foi realizado em branco e preto porque as cores das flores das locações em Santa Mônica, no sul da Califórnia, não coincidiam com a cor das flores do País de Gales.

O filme levou apenas duas semanas para ser realizado.

Qu'elle était verte ma vallée (How Green Was My Valley) est un film américain réalisé par John Ford, sorti en 1941, d'après le roman de Richard Llewellyn.En réalisant Qu’elle est verte ma vallée, qui raconte la jeunesse d’un Gallois aux temps des mines, John Ford quitte le genre du western. Ce n’est pas pour autant qu’on ne retrouve pas le thème préféré de Ford, à savoir la vie en communauté.

Il nous peint avec grande tendresse une famille du XVIII° siècle et rend ses personnages infiniment humains et proches. Comme dans ses meilleurs westerns, les personnages vont et viennent entre le monde extérieur (école, mine) et le lieu clôt mais rassurant de la maison. La famille, très ancrée dans certaines valeurs, fait face aux bouleversements de leur siècle (industrialisation, chômage et syndicalisme ; départ pour l’Amérique ; éducation à l’école). L’abondance d’éléments, de personnages, de rebondissements, la durée des évènements et la structure en flash-back avec voix-off d’un narrateur donnent au film un aspect très romanesque et en font une véritable fresque (il est d’ailleurs basé d’un livre).

Ford filme le tout avec génie et offre une mise en scène pleine de grâce, dans un noir et blanc sublime (mémorable plan dans lequel le jeune héros essaye de marcher à nouveau, en haut de la colline devant un champ lumineux). Les scènes dans la mine ou les vues des paysages sont également très beaux ; chaque plan semble être le plan parfait. En conclusion, ce film très nostalgique est doté d’un charme modeste, qui évoque nos souvenirs d’enfance et un paradis perdu ; néanmoins, il souffre de son classicisme et de quelques longueurs.

How Green Was My Valley is a 1941 drama film directed by John Ford. The film, based on the 1939 Richard Llewellyn novel, was produced by Darryl F. Zanuck and written by Philip Dunne. The film stars Walter Pidgeon, Maureen O'Hara, Anna Lee, Donald Crisp, and Roddy McDowall. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning five and beating out for Best Picture such classics as Citizen Kane, The Maltese Falcon, Suspicion and Sergeant York.

The film tells the story of the Morgans, a close, hard-working Welsh family at the turn of the twentieth century in the South Wales coalfield at the heart of the South Wales Valleys. It chronicles a socio-economic way of life passing and the family unit disintegrating.

In 1990, How Green Was My Valley was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".

The story is told through the eyes and with the voice-over narration of Huw Morgan (Roddy McDowall), now a middle-aged man leaving his home, a mining town in the Rhondda Valley, and recalling the events that most impressed his younger self. The boy Huw is played by Roddy, but the voice-over is that of unseen actor Irving Pichel.

Huw's first memories are of the marriage of his brother, Ivor (Patric Knowles), and the burgeoning, unspoken and ill-fated romance of his sister, Angharad (Maureen O'Hara), with the new preacher, Mr. Gruffydd (Walter Pidgeon). Because of the forbidden nature of the romance, Angharad marries another man (whom she later divorces), and Mr. Gruffydd leaves the chapel in disgust after being subjected to untrue town gossip - his romance with Angharad is never consummated, nor do they ever marry. Still too young to work in the local coal mine like his father, Gwilym (Donald Crisp), and his five older brothers, Huw senses the seriousness of an imminent strike by the rift it creates between his father and the other boys when three of them move out of the family abode.

During the tensions of the strike, Huw saves his mother (Sara Allgood) from drowning and in so doing temporarily loses the use of his legs. As Gruffydd aids in Huw's recovery, insisting on a positive attitude, he suggests that it is only the first of many trials the boy will have to face. Other subplots are explored in the film, which concludes with the death of Gwilym Morgan in a mining accident.

Biographie et oeuvre de Pietro Annigoni

Pietro Annigoni est né le 7 juin 1910. Son père qui s'appelait Ricciardo, était un fameux ingénieur
et sa mère Thérèse était une américaine de San Francisco (Californie).
En 1925 le père Ricciardo est chargé de la création de l’installation du réseau téléphonique
automatique de la ville di Firenze, où il se rend temporairement dans cette ville avec sa famille .
En 1928, il accéda à l’Académie des Beaux Arts, où il obtiendra ses diplômes en Peinture avec
Felice Carena, en Scuplture avec Giuseppe Graziosi et en Gravure avec Celestino Celestini.
Toutes ces années ont été très importantes pour la formation de la personnalité de Pietro
Annigoni. C'est en cette année-là qu'il rencontra Anna Maggini, encore étudiante du Conservatoire
Luigi Cherubini, avec laquelle Pietro se mariera en 1937. De leur union sont nés deux enfants :
Benedetto, en 1939 et Maria Ricciarda, en 1948. Le rapport avec Anna, fondé sur des idéaux
communs, est très intense, mais non sans contrastes, tant qu’il aboutira, avec souffrance en 1954 a
une séparation consensuelle. Cependant, Anna restera pour Pietro un point de repère dans sa vie car
il l'a démontré à travers des pages touchantes du “Diario” qu'il a dédiées à son ex-épouse à
l’occasion de son décès survenu en 1969.

- 1930 : Sa première exposition collective se passa à Firenze
- 1932 : Il présenta avec grand succès, sa première exposition personnelle a Palazzo Ferroni
dans la galleria Bellini. Ugo Ojetti lui dédia un mémorable article en troisième page sur le
journal Corriere della Sera. Toujours en 1932 il gagna le prix “Trentacoste”.
- 1936 : à Milan, il fit une exposition de ses oeuvres qui offrit une exceptionnelle admiration
du grand public.
- Anticonformiste et anti-totalitariste, durant le fascisme de Benito Mussolini, Pietro a été
contraint de s'éloigner de la classe dirigeante italienne. Il fallait attendre les années de l'après
guerre (1945-1950) pour voir se réaliser les grandes oeuvres de Pietro dans sa "bottega", son
atelier qui est devenu une véritable école avec des élèves qui sont devenus eux aussi de
illustres personnage.
- En 1949, la Commission de l'Académie Royale de Londres accepta d’exposer ses oeuvres.
C’est le début d’un grand succès qui va lui conduire à avoir une renommée mondiale.
- Annigoni exposera plusieurs fois ses oeuvres à Londres: chez Wildenstein (1950,1954),
chez Agnew (1952- 1955), chez la Fédération of British Artists (1961), Chez Upper
Grosvenor Galleries (1966), outre à la participation constante aux expositions de l'Académie
Royale.
- 1953, à Paris, il exposa ses oeuvres à la Galerie Beaux Arts,
- 1957-1958 à New York chez Wildenstein
- 1961 à New York au Brooklyn Museum
- 1969 au "Palace of the Legion of Honor" en Californie à San Francisco.
- Pietro a parcouru le monde d'un bout à l'autre : Indes, Afrique du Sud, Iran, Mexique, et
Amérique du Sud… à la recherche d’émotions, de culture, de paysages toujours différents,
qu’il saisissait avec une synthèse exceptionnelle dans ses esquisses et dans ses dessins. C’est
durant ces voyages qu'il rencontra sur le navire Raffaello, en 1966, Rossella Segreto. Cette
étincelle d'amour qui s'est établie entre eux les conduisit à s’unir en mariage en 1977. Pietro
Annigoni trouvera en Rosella une collaboratrice précieuse qui le suivra avec Ugo Ugolini et
les élèves de toujours, durant les derniers grands cycles de fresques.
- Aujourd'hui, ses oeuvres sont exposées dans de très grands importants musés du monde
entre lesquels : la Galerie des Uffizi, la Galerie des Arts Modernes de Palais Pitti à Firenze,
le Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, la Collection royale de Windsor Castle, le
National Portrait Gallery de Londres et les Musés du Vatican.
- On trouve aussi ses fresques, dans le couvent de Saint Marc à Firenze, dans l’Église de Saint
Michel Archange à Ponte Buggianese, dans l’Abbaye de Montecassino, dans l’Église du
Saint Antoine à Padoue, dans la Fondation Stillman à Wetherfield, Connecticut, U.S.A…
Face à ces grandes oeuvres, Bernard Berenson écrivit : “Pietro Annigoni, est non seulement
le plus grand peintre de ce siècle, mais il est même en état de rivaliser quitte avec les plus
grands peintres de tous les siècles “et”… restera dans l’histoire comme un contestataire
d’une époque sombre…”.
Après une longue maladie , durant laquelle il eut le réconfort de sa femme Rossella, de ses
deux enfants Benedetto et Maria Ricciarda, Pietro Annigoni mourut le 28 octobre 1988 à Firenze.
Désormais il repose dans le Cimetière Monumental des Portes Saintes à San Miniato a Monte en
Italie.

Rebecca est le premier film américain réalisé par Alfred Hitchcock, sorti en 1940.

C'est l'adaptation éponyme du roman de Daphne du Maurier publié en 1938, conte gothique traitant de l'emprise d'une morte sur celui qui fut son mari, la nouvelle épouse et leur gouvernante longtemps après sa mort.

Mrs. Edythe Van Hopper, respectable veuve déjà âgée, accompagnée de sa jeune demoiselle de compagnie, est en villégiature à Monte-Carlo dans l'hôtel Côte-d'Azur, lorsque leur chemin croise celui de Maxim de Winter, riche veuf, qui n'a aucun mal à séduire la jeune fille et, dans la foulée, à l'épouser et l'emmener dans sa demeure ancestrale de Manderley, quelque part sur la côte sud-est de l'Angleterre.

Les premiers contacts avec le personnel du château, régenté par la peu amène gouvernante Mrs. Danvers, sont glaciaux. Cette dernière, en effet, attachée depuis toujours au service de la précédente Mrs. de Winter, Rebecca, et lui vouant une passion sans limite, même à titre posthume, n'accepte pas l'intrusion de l'« usurpatrice ».

Le souvenir de l'épouse disparue et vénérée continue de hanter le château sombre.

Bien que Rebecca soit le premier film qu'il ait tourné en Amérique, Alfred Hitchcock n'en reste pas moins fidèle à son Royaume-Uni natal. En effet, l'histoire est adaptée d'un roman de l'auteur britannique Daphne du Maurier.

Hitchcock comptait sur la popularité du roman afin de promouvoir son premier film américain. Un slogan disait You loved the novel, you'll live the film (Vous avez aimé le roman, vous vivrez le film).

The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Picture out of a total 11 nominations. Olivier, Fontaine and Anderson were all Oscar nominated for their respective roles. Since the introduction of awards for actors in supporting roles, this is the only film named Best Picture that won no other Academy Award for acting, directing or writing.

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (Dronrijp, 8 de janeiro de 1836 - Wiesbaden, 26 de junho de 1912) foi um dos mais proeminentes pintores e desenhistas do neoclassicismo europeu. Ao longo de sua vida, Alma-Tadema também adquiriu cidadania na Bélgica bem como no Reino Unido.

Alma-Tadema era filho do advogado Pieter Tadema e de sua segunda esposa. Seu pai faleceu em 1840 e ele ganhou um padrasto (daí o seu sobrenome Alma, do qual procurou distanciar-se mais tarde em sua vida). Aos 16 anos (1852) Alma-Tadema foi à Antuérpia onde freqüentou a academia de arte de Gustave Wappers.

Aos 27 anos (em 1863) Alma-Tadema perdeu a sua mãe.

Com estes contatos e experiência acumulada, ele pode, mais tarde, transferir-se ao ateliê de Henri Leys, a quem veio a servir de assistente. Em 1859 Alma-Tadema auxiliou Leys na decoração do prédio da prefeitura da Antuérpia. Nos anos seguintes Alma-Tadema trabalhou como artista independente; freqüentando, porém, alternadamente, o ateliê de Joseph Laurent Dyckmans ou o ateliê de Gustave Wappers na condição de aprendiz.

Em 1863 Alma-Tadema casou-se com uma uma inglesa com quem viveu na cidade de Bruxelas até 1869, quando faleceu na Alemanha.

Uma de suas pinturas foi premiada com medalha em 1864 numa exposição que ocorreu em um salão parisiense. Igualmente, na exposição internacional de Paris, em 1867, as suas peças em exibição também foram agraciadas com prêmios.

Acompanhado de suas duas filhas, Laurence e Anna, Alma-Tadema mudou-se para Londres em 1870. Ali dedicou-se nos anos seguintes a pintar quadros inspirados na antigüidade, no classisismo greco-romano.

Em Londres, em 1871, Alma-Tadema desposou Laura Epps, pertencente a uma família artística. Ela passou a assinar-se Laura Alma-Tadema. Na ocasião de seu aniversário, em 1873, quando completou seus quarenta anos de idade, lhe foi concedida, e ele recebeu, formalmente, a cidadania britânica.

Em 1876 a Royal Academy School of Arts recebeu Alma-Tadema na condição temporária de Associate, ou seja, membro associado; e três anos mais tarde esta mesma instituição o convidou a fazer parte de seu quadro de membros regulares.

Ao completar os seus sessenta e três anos de idade, em 1899, a Rainha Vitória concedeu a Alma-Tadema o título honorífico de cavaleiro.

Aos setenta e seis anos de idade, no dia 25 de junho de 1912, Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema faleceu em Wiesbaden, na Alemanha.

Gone with the Wind (...E o Vento Levou) é um filme clássico americano de 1939, do gênero romance dramático, dirigido por Victor Fleming e com roteiro de Sidney Howard, adaptado do livro homónimo de autoria de Margaret Mitchell. Entre os colaboradores do roteiro estiveram também os escritores F. Scott Fitzgerald e William Faulkner.

Apesar da direção ter sido creditada exclusivamente a Victor Fleming, ele dirigiu apenas 45% do filme, com o restante cabendo a George Cukor, Sam Wood, William Cameron Menzies e Sidney Franklin, todos não-creditados.

A produção de Gone with the Wind custou pouco mais de cinco milhões de dólares aos cofres da MGM e, quatro anos depois de seu lançamento, a renda obtida pelo filme nas bilheterias já superava a marca dos 32 milhões de dólares.

O filme, na sua primeira parte, mostra uma visão idealizada da sociedade branca do velho sul dos Estados Unidos da América. Os senhores de escravos são mostrados como protetores benevolentes, e a causa confederada como nobre defesa da terra natal e de um modo de vida. Na segunda parte do filme, após a derrota do Sul na Guerra Civil, é mostrado os ex-escravos, juntos com os nortistas, (os ianques), explorando os endividados fazendeiros sulistas. Com isso, o filme apresenta um alinhamento tardio com o movimento chamado Lost Cause, como Jezebel, The Undefeated, Santa Fe Trail, The General e The Birth of a Nation, os quais também apresentam uma visão positiva sobre a socieade sulista e apresentam a visão sulista sobre a Guerra Civil.

Gone with the Wind foi o primeiro filme a cores, usando a tecnologia technicolor, a ganhar o Oscar de melhor filme.

O filme conta a saga da voluntariosa Scarlett O'Hara, filha de um imigrante irlandês que se tornou um rico fazendeiro do sul dos Estados Unidos, durante a guerra civil americana.

Scarlett começa o filme como uma jovem mimada e atrevida que vive na fazenda dos pais. Ela é apaixonada por Ashley Wilkes, filho do fazendeiro vizinho, mas este se casa com Melanie Hamilton. Para fazer ciúmes, logo em seguida Scarlett casa com Charles Hamilton, irmão de Melanie. Após os casamentos, Ashley e Charles partem para a Guerra, que havia acabado de ser declarada. Contudo, Charles morre pouco tempo depois disso. Após ficar viúva, Scarlett vai para a cidade de Atlanta para viver com Melanie e aguardar a volta de Ashley, e acaba por servir ao Sul, como enfermeira, ajudando a cuidar dos feridos da chamada guerra de secessão. Durante esse tempo fora de casa ela começa a sentir na pele o sofrimento, fome e pobreza. Ao voltar para a fazenda dos pais, Scarlett encontra sua mãe morta, seu pai louco e toda a fortuna destruída. Diante dessa situação desesperadora ela toma as devidas providências para não deixar que tomem a sua querida "Tara".

Durante esse processo, Scarlett precisa da ajuda de Rhett (Clark Gable) diversas vezes, chegando até a se casar com ele após a perda de seu segundo marido. Porém, Scarlett nunca se deu muito bem com Rhett, casando com ele por interesse. Só no final do filme Scarlett realmente se apaixona por Rhett, contudo o desfecho é inesperado.

Ficou famosa em Hollywood a disputa das atrizes pelo papel de Scarlett. Mais de 1400 atrizes foram entrevistadas para o papel, sendo que mais de 400 chegaram a fazer leitura do roteiro. Vivien Leigh, que era inglesa (apesar de nascida na Índia), foi escolhida pelo produtor David O. Selznick quando já haviam iniciado as filmagens. Durante as filmagens do incêndio de Atlanta, ele a viu ao lado de seu marido, o ator Laurence Olivier, e logo lhe ofereceu o papel da heroína sulista.

Vivien Leigh trabalhou nos sets de filmagem por 125 dias e recebeu por isso a quantia de 25 mil dólares; já Clark Gable trabalhou por 71 dias e ganhou 120 mil dólares.

Durante as filmagens, ninguém na produção acreditava que Vivien Leigh fosse resistir ao charme de Clark Gable. Mas, na verdade, eles não se entendiam, pois ela considerava pouco profissional que ele deixasse o estúdio sempre às seis da tarde, todos os dias. Ele achava um abuso oferecer um papel essencialmente norte americana a uma atriz britânica.

Vivien se entendia bem com o diretor George Cukor. Gable preferia Victor Fleming. Vivien odiava o hálito de Gable - ele comia cebolas de propósito, poucas horas antes de gravar - e o cheiro de licor, que a deixava com náuseas. Ele revelou que, quando a beijava, pensava em um bife. Na verdade, na pele de Rhett Butler ou Scarlett O'Hara ou na de Clark Gable e Vivien Leigh, eles jamais se entenderam.

Hattie McDaniel tornou-se a primeira artista de origem africana a ser indicada e a receber um prêmio Oscar (o de melhor atriz coadjuvante). Porém, ela não pôde comparecer na première de Gone with the Wind, em Atlanta, por causa das leis racistas

Alessandro Allori ou Alexandre Allori, élève et fils adoptif du Bronzino, est un peintre florentin maniériste (Florence, 31 mai 1535 - Florence, 22 septembre 1607).

Il est le père de Cristofano Allori. Il a eu pour maîtres un ami de la famille Angelo di Cosimo di Mariano dit Il Bronzino, puis Michel-Ange. À certains égards, Allori est le dernier de la lignée d'éminents peintres florentins : Andrea del Sarto a collaboré avec Fra Bartolomeo (ainsi que Léonard de Vinci), Pontormo a brièvement été l'élève d'Andrea et a formé Bronzino qui lui-même a formé Allori. Les générations suivantes furent fortement influencées par la vague baroque qui dominait dans d'autres parties de l'Italie.

Allori a été l'un des artistes ayant travaillé, sous les ordres de Giorgio Vasari, sur la décoration du Studiolo de François Ier.

O roteiro é uma adaptação da peça de teatro de George S. Kaufman e Moss Hart, que ganhou o Prêmio Pulitzer em 1937, e estava ainda em cartaz quando o filme estreou.

Sinopse

Tony Kirby, o filho de um empresário rico e influente, resolve se casar com Alice Sycamore, uma moça simples, pertencente a uma família de pessoas extrovertidas e amalucadas, o que gera um choque de comportamentos. Enquanto isso, o pai do rapaz pretende erguer um importante empreendimento e já comprou todos os imóveis da região onde a família de moça vive, com exceção da casa dela. Como a família da moça se recusa a vender a casa, e sem este imóvel o projeto não pode ir adiante, eles acabam se enfrentando.

Synopsis

Anthony P. Kirby (Edward Arnold) est un homme d'affaires ambitieux qui souhaite installer l'une de ses usines dans un quartier résidentiel mais doit pour cela exproprier plusieurs personnes. Ayant acheté la plupart des terrains du bloc, il se heurte à l'opposition de Martin Vanderhof (Lionel Barrymore) qui refuse de lui vendre sa maison. Parallèlement, Tony Kirby (James Stewart), son fils, demande en mariage sa secrétaire Alice Sycamore (Jean Arthur) qui se trouve être la petite-fille de Martin Vanderhof.

Fable sociale sur l'Amérique des années 1930, Vous ne l'emporterez pas avec vous reprend plusieurs des thèmes chers à Frank Capra. Le personnage d'Anthony P. Kirby représente l'Amérique des nantis, à qui l'argent et le pouvoir ont fait oublier les vraies valeurs. La famille Vanderhof-Sycamore, galerie de doux-dingues aux principes simples et vrais, incarne avec humour les valeurs humanitaires, sociales et morales que Capra a défendues dans son œuvre cinématographique.

Le scénario du film fut adapté par Riskin d'une pièce éponyme à succès de George S. Kaufman et Moss Hart qui mettait en scène une maison pleine d'anarchistes rêveurs mené par un grand-père indulgent. La pièce reçut le prix Pulitzer en 1937.

Ingredientes para o bolo

3 1/4 xícaras farinha de trigo peneirada
2 colheres de chá de fermento em pó
3/4 colher de chá de sal
1 xícaras de açúcar
1 xícara de açúcar mascavo
1 xícara de manteiga sem sal, em temperatura ambiente
1 colher de chá de extrato de baunilha
4 ovos grandes
1 1/2 xícara de leite integral
1 xícara de pecãs, torradas, picadas finamente
1/4 xícara de xarope de milho (Karo e afins)
1/4 xícara de melaço de cana
1/2 colher de chá de bicarbonato de sódio

Ingredientes da calda

2 colheres de chá de água
1 colher de chá de bicarbonato de sódio
2 xícaras de açúcar
1 xícara de creme de leite fresco
1 xícara de manteiga sem sal
2 colheres de chá de xarope de milho
2/3 copo de bourbon

Modo de preparo do bolo

Pré-aqueça o forno em temperatura média. Unte com manteiga uma assadeira média
com furo no meio. Em um tigela, coloque a farinha de trigo, o fermento e o sal. Em
outra, bata com batedeira o açúcar normal e o mascavo, a manteiga e a baunilha até se
tornar uma mistura cremosa. Incorpore os ovos, um por vez. Jogue dentro desta tigela,
aos poucos, a mistura de farinha de trigo, alternando com o leite. Coloque metade
desta massa na forma untada. Em outra tigela, coloque as pecãs, o xarope de milho,
o melaço e bata, com batedeira, até misturar bem. Incorpore o bicarbonato. Jogue essa
mistura na metade restante da massa e bata, novamente. Coloque delicadamente sobre
a massa já na forma. Asse em forno médio por cerca de 45 minutos ou até inserir um
palito de fósforo no centro do bolo e este sair seco.

Modo de preparo da calda

Misture 2 colheres de chá de água e o bicarbonato de sódio em uma tigela pequena e
mexa até dissolver. Numa panela, coloque o açúcar, a manteiga, e o xarope de milho
e leve ao fogo alto — mexendo sempre — até que o açúcar e a manteiga derretam.
Reduza o calor, adicione a mistura de bicarbonato e ferva, sem esquecer de mexer, até
que vire uma calda espessa e dourada (cerca de 8 minutos). Retire do fogo, adicione o
creme de leite e o bourbon.

Finalização

Assim que o bolo esfriar, desenforme-o em um prato e coloque a calda quente sobre ele.
Deixe esfriar antes de comer.

A sua obra principal foi uma série de quadros grandiosos e de brilhante colorido consagrados à história da Europa.

Foi director da Academia de Belas Artes de Copenhagen, e nesta qualidade publicou numerosos escritos acerca da teoria e da história da arte.

Nicolai Abraham Abildgaard (Copenhague 11 septembre 1743 – près de Frederiksdal 4 juin 1809) était un architecte, un peintre, dessinateur et décorateur danois.

Il compléta sa formation artistique en Italie (1772-1777) et joua un rôle important dans le développement du courant néoclassique au Danemark. Il manifesta des dons de coloriste et fit preuve d'un romantisme latent à travers une forme classicisante (portraits, esquisses de fresques). One day, his old friend Cézanne, still poor and unknown, visits him before leaving the city. He tells Zola that he has become complacent, a far cry from the zealous reformer of his youth.

Meanwhile, a French secret agent steals a letter addressed to a military officer in the German embassy. The letter confirms there is a spy within the top French army staff. With little thought (and much antisemitism), the army commanders decide that Jewish Captain Alfred Dreyfus (Joseph Schildkraut) is the traitor. He is courtmartialed and imprisoned on Devil's Island in French Guyana.

Later, Colonel Picquart (Henry O'Neill), the new chief of intelligence, discovers evidence implicating Major Walsin-Esterhazy (Robert Barrat) as the spy, but he is ordered by his superiors to remain silent, as this revelation would embarrass them. He is quickly reassigned to a distant post.

Years go by. Finally, Dreyfus's loyal wife Lucie (Gale Sondergaard) pleads with Zola to take up her husband's cause. Zola is reluctant to give up his comfortable life, but the evidence she has brought him piques his curiosity and he recalls Cézanne's parting words. He publishes a letter in the newspaper accusing the army of covering up a monstrous injustice. Zola barely escapes from an angry mob incited by agents provocateurs employed by the military.

As he had expected, he is brought to trial for libel. His attorney, Maitre Labori (Donald Crisp) does his best, but the presiding judge refuses to allow him to bring up the Dreyfus affair and the military witnesses all commit perjury, with the exception of Picquart. Zola is found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison. He reluctantly accepts the advice of his friends and flees to England, where he continues to write on behalf of Dreyfus.

A new administration finally admits that Dreyfus is innocent, those responsible for the coverup are forced to resign or are dismissed, and Walsin-Esterhazy flees the country. However, Zola dies of carbon monoxide poisoning due to a faulty stove the night before the public ceremony in which Dreyfus is exonerated.

Louise Abbéma (Etampes, França, 1853 - Paris, França, 1927) foi uma pintora francesa descendendo de Louise Contat, célebre atriz francesa, e do Conde Luís de Narbonne, ministro da guerra em 1791.

Louise Abbéma estreou no Salon de 1874 e não tardou a chamar a atenção pela franqueza e maleabilidade do seu talento. Produziu retratos, entre os quais se deve notar o de Paulo Mantz, Sarah Bernhardt, sua grande amiga e, dizem, sua amante. Entre suas obras estão pinturas decorativas, flores, aquarelas, medalhões e águas fortes.

Elle fut élève de Charles Chaplin, de Jean-Jacques Henner et de Carolus-Duran. Elle eut un grand succès grâce à un portrait de Sarah Bernhardt, réalisé alors qu’elle avait 22 ans.

Elle exposa régulièrement au Salon des artistes français jusqu’en 1926, où elle reçut une mention honorable en 1881. Elle reçut la Légion d'honneur en 1906.

Elle travailla aussi pour plusieurs magazines d’art et illustra La Mer de René Maizeroy.

Elle reste surtout connue pour ses portraits de femmes de la haute société. Son style est conventionnel et ne reflète rien des courants créateurs de son époque, fondateurs de l'art moderne.

Abbéma was born in Étampes, Essonne. She began painting in her early teens, and studied under such notables of the period as Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner and Carolus-Duran. She first received recognition for her work at age 23 when she painted a portrait of Sarah Bernhardt, her life-long friend and, many believe, her lover.

She went on to paint portraits of other contemporary notables, and also painted panels and murals which adorned the Paris Town Hall, the Paris Opera House, numerous theatres including the "Theatre Sarah Bernhardt", and the "Palace of the Colonial Governor" at Dakar, Senegal.

She was a regular exhibitor at the Paris Salon, where she received an honorable mention for her panels in 1881. Abbéma was also among the female artists whose works were exhibited in the Women's Building at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. A bust Sarah Bernhardt sculpted of Abbéma was also exhibited at the exposition.

Abbéma specialized in oil portraits and watercolors, and many of her works showed the influence from Chinese and Japanese painters, as well as contemporary masters such as Édouard Manet. She frequently depicted flowers in her works. Among her best known works are The Seasons, April Morning, Place de la Concorde, Among the Flowers, Winter, and portraits of actress Jeanne Samary, Emperor Dom Pedro II of Brazil, Ferdinand de Lesseps, and Charles Garnier.

Abbéma was also an accomplished printmaker, sculptor, and designer, as well as a writer who made regular contributions to the journals Gazette des Beaux-Arts and L'Art.

Among the many honors conferred upon Abbéma was nomination as "Official Painter of the Third Republic." She was also awarded a bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle and in 1906 made a Chevalier of the Order of the Légion d'honneur.

Abbéma died in Paris in 1927. At the end of the 20th century, as contributions by women to the arts in past centuries received more critical and historical attention, her works have been enjoying a renewed popularity.

John White Alexander (7 October 1856 – 31 May 1915) was an American portrait, figure, and decorative painter and illustrator.

He was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania, now a part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Orphaned in infancy, he was reared by his grandparents and at the age of 12 became a telegraph boy in Pittsburgh. His talent at drawing attracted the attention of one of his employers, who assisted him to develop them. He moved to New York at the age of eighteen and worked in an office at Harper's Weekly, where he was an illustrator and political cartoonist. After an apprenticeship of three years, he travelled to Munich for his first formal training. Owing to the lack of funds, he removed to the village of Polling, Bavaria. He travelled to Venice and then he continued his studies in Florence, the Netherlands, and Paris.

In 1881 he returned to New York and speedily achieved great success in portraiture. His first exhibition in the Paris Salon of 1893 was a brilliant success and was followed by his immediate election to the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts.

John White Alexander died in New York on 31 May 1915.

Many of his paintings are in museums and public places in the United States and in Europe, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Butler Institute, and the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. In addition, in the entrance hall to the Art Museum of the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, a series of Alexander's murals entitled "Apotheosis of Pittsburgh" (1905–1907) covers the walls of the three-storey atrium area.

A cantora de ópera australiana Joan Sutherland, conhecida como "La Stupenda" por sua legião de fãs, morreu aos 83 anos na Suíça, anunciou na segunda-feira (11/10/10) sua gravadora Decca.

Sua família disse que a soprano, certa vez considerada pelo tenor italiano Luciano Pavarotti "a maior voz do século", morreu em paz nas primeiras horas do domingo depois de sofrer longamente de uma doença.

A cantora estreou nos palcos em 1951 e, ao longo de uma carreira ilustre que abrangeu 40 anos, apresentou-se em muitos dos maiores teatros de ópera do mundo.

Sua última aparição no palco foi em 31 de dezembro de 1989, no Royal Opera House de Londres, cantando "Die Fledermaus" ao lado de Pavarotti.

Depois de se aposentar dos palcos, ela continuou ativa, ensinando cantores mais jovens, e se tornou presença constante em júris de concursos de cantores em todo o mundo.

Band of Mad Women likes to mix it up a bit. Their music is a cornucopia of world, folk, and electronica. They move from Celtic to reggae to techno, sometimes all in the same song!
Take the title track on their online album, Rodopted. Its starts with a Clannad-styled vocal laid over a jew harp and soft percussion. The tension build as it takes on a middle eastern influence. By the time it reaches the end, the instruments includes african beats, a trap drum set, trance inducing woodwinds, and a male chorus. All of this drives the track to a dramatic finish. The second track, “Takes my Wings Away” featured a beautiful vocal framed by tablas but switches unexpectingly to a frenzied disco beat and back.
The album is full of this odd marriage of techno and world beat. It all works due to very talented vocals and a clear respect for the world music that they mix with their electronic tricks. This is an album that reveals new insights with each hearing.

Ivan Nikolaevich Kramskoi (1837 – 1887) was a Russian painter and art critic. He was the intellectual leader of the Russian democratic art movement in 1860-1880.

Kramskoi came from a poor petty-bourgeois family. From 1857 to 1863 he studied at the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts; he reacted against academic art, and he was an initiator of the "revolt of fourteen" which ended with an expulsion from the Academy of arts of its graduates.

Under the influence of ideas of the Russian revolutionary democrats Kramskoi asserted representation about a high public duty of artist, principles of realism, moral substance and a nationality of art. He created gallery of portraits of the largest Russian writers, scientific, artists and public figures in which expressive simplicity of a composition, clearness of figure emphasize the leading part of the profound psychological characteristic. Democratic sights of Kramskoi found the brightest expression in portraits of the peasants who reflected sincere riches and internal advantage of the person from people.

Kramskoi treated a religious plot in moral–philosophical plan. He gave the Christ dramatic experiences deeply psychological vital interpretation, idea of heroic self-sacrifice. One of Kramskoi’s most well known paintings is Christ in the Desert (1872, Tretyakov gallery).

Foi o primeiro filme a conquistar as cinco categorias mais importantes do prêmio Oscar: filme, diretor, ator, atriz e roteiro.

A filha de um milionário sai de casa quando seu pai não permite que ela se case com seu pretendente playboy. Nessa fuga, ela encontra um jornalista sem futuro, porém charmoso, e os acontecimentos que seguem farão com que eles se aproximem. Com Clark Gable (Peter Warne) e Claudette Colbert (Ellie Andrews).

Nesse filme tem uma cena famosa na qual a atriz principal pede carona mostrando suas pernas.

Claudette Colbert não gostou do filme e não ia participou da cerimônia de entrega do Oscar pois pretendia viajar. Porém, quando soube que havia ganho prêmio de melhor atriz, dirigiu-se rapidamente ao local vestindo a roupa com que iria viajar.

Jugé trop insolent, Peter Warne est congédié du journal qui l'emploie. Pendant ce temps, la riche Ellie Andrews, jeune fille gâtée dont le père milliardaire, Alexander Andrews, refuse qu'elle épouse l'homme de ses rêves, King Westley, s'échappe de l'emprise de son père en se sauvant du yacht dans lequel il l'avait séquestrée, pour aller rejoindre le play-boy aviateur avec qui elle s'est secrètement fiancée. Alexander lance des détectives sur les traces de sa fille mais les recherches sont infructueuses.

Peter Warne et Ellie Andrews se rencontrent dans un autocar reliant Miami à New York. D'abord attiré par le scoop et éventuellement la récompense qu'il pourrait obtenir, Peter ne quitte plus sa nouvelle compagne de voyage qui vient en outre de se faire voler tout l'argent qu'elle transportait sur elle. Faute de moyens, c'est donc en auto-stop qu'ils poursuivent, étape par étape, leur route vers New York Après maintes péripéties au cours desquelles ils doivent se faire passer pour un couple légitime et ainsi dormir dans la même chambre, seulement séparés par une couverture "le mur de Jéricho", ils finissent par s'éprendre l'un de l'autre.

Alors qu'Ellie est endormie, Peter lui fausse compagnie pour aller vendre son histoire au journal et ainsi tenter d'arracher de l'argent à son rédacteur en chef qui lui permettrait d'épouser Ellie. Dépitée, se croyant trahie, cette dernière retourne chez son père qui accepte enfin qu'elle se marie avec King Westley. Toutefois, au dernier moment, Ellie comprend qu'elle ne pourra vivre sans Peter. Elle abandonne alors l'aviateur et le mur de Jéricho s'effondre...

It Happened One Night is a 1934 American comedy film with elements of screwball comedy directed by Frank Capra, in which a pampered socialite (Claudette Colbert) tries to get out from under her father's thumb, and falls in love with a roguish reporter (Clark Gable). The plot was based on the story Night Bus by Samuel Hopkins Adams, which provided the shooting title.

The film was the first to win all five major Academy Awards (Best Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, and Screenplay), a feat that would not be matched until One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975) and later by The Silence of the Lambs (1991). It was remade as a 1956 musical comedy, You Can't Run Away from It, starring Jack Lemmon and June Allyson.

Spoiled heiress Ellen "Ellie" Andrews (Claudette Colbert) marries fortune-hunter "King" Westley (Jameson Thomas) against the wishes of her extremely wealthy father (Walter Connolly). He retrieves his daughter before the marriage can be consummated, but then she runs away. Boarding a bus to New York City, she meets fellow passenger Peter Warne (Clark Gable), an out-of-work newspaper reporter. He recognizes her and gives her a choice: if she will give him an exclusive on her story he will help her reunite with Westley. If not he will tell her father where she is and collect the reward. Ellie agrees to the first choice.

When they have to hitchhike, Peter claims to be an expert on the subject. When nothing he tries works, out of frustration, he eventually ends up thumbing his nose at passing cars. The sheltered Ellie then shows him how it's done. She stops the next car dead in its tracks by lifting up her skirt and showing off a shapely leg.

One night, when they are nearing the end of their journey, Peter leaves to make some arrangements. The owners of the motel in which they are staying see that his car is gone and assume he has left without paying. They rouse Ellie out of bed and kick her out. Believing Peter has deserted her, Ellie calls her father, who is so relieved to get her back that he agrees to let her have her way. Ellie has fallen in love with Peter, but she thinks he betrayed her for the reward money, so she agrees to have a second, formal wedding with Westley. Meanwhile, Peter believes he is the one who has been double-crossed.

Peter gets in touch with Ellie's father to settle up. Mr. Andrews offers him the large reward promised, but Peter will have none of it. He just wants to be paid $39.60 for the expenses incurred on the trip. Intrigued, the father badgers the reporter until he gets the truth: Peter loves Ellie (though he thinks he is out of his mind to do so). Peter leaves with the check he asked for.

While walking his daughter down the aisle, Andrews tells her what he has found out and encourages her to run off again, telling her there is a car waiting for her out back; at the very last moment, when asked whether she takes this man, she escapes again. Her father pays Westley to have the marriage annulled, enabling Ellie to marry Peter.

Hans Baldung, também conhecido como Baldung Grien, em razão de sua preferência pela cor verde, (Schwäbisch Gmünd, 1484 ou 1485 — Strasburg, setembro de 1545) foi um famoso pintor alemão do Renascimento.

Viveu na sua cidade natal até 1502, quando se mudou para Nuremberg, onde trabalhou no ateliê de Albrecht Dürer, tendo permanecido aí cinco anos, o que muito o influenciou nas suas obras.

Em 1509 mudou-se, novamente, para Strasburg, onde entra em contacto com os círculos intelectuais de Martinho Lutero. Porém, entre 1512 e 1517, passou a residir em Fribourg, trabalhando na sua obra-prima, o altar da catedral.

Apesar de realizar uma boa produção religiosa, a sua temática favorita era macabra, sendo a morte e o erotismo contantes em toda a sua obra. Atualmente, algumas das suas obras estão expostas no Museu do Prado em Madrid.

Hans Baldung, dit Grien (en raison de sa prédilection pour la couleur verte), est un peintre, dessinateur et graveur allemand de la Renaissance. Il est né à Weyersheim près de Strasbourg, où son père était fonctionnaire du prince-évêque,en 1484 ou 1485 et mort à Strasbourg en septembre 1545.

Son père ayant depuis 1492 la charge de conseiller juridique de l'évêque de Strasbourg (Albert de Bavière) et sa famille habitant dans cette ville, le jeune Hans Baldung y fit son apprentissage, auprès d'un artiste demeuré inconnu. Il perfectionna son art dans l'atelier d'Albrecht Dürer à Nuremberg entre 1503 et 1507, puis passa l'essentiel de sa vie à Strasbourg, hormis un séjour à Fribourg-en-Brisgau en 1513-1516 où il réalisa entre autres le retable de la cathédrale. Plusieurs de ses tableaux allégoriques sont énigmatiques et ont fait l'objet de réattributions et de changements de titres au cours de l'histoire.

Hans Baldung, called Grien, one of the greatest upper German painters, printmakers and copperplate engravers was born in Schwäbisch-Gmünd in 1470. A short time after his birth, his parents moved to Strasbourg, where Baldung spent his time as an apprentice under a Strasbourg master. In 1503 he went to Nuremberg, where he worked as journeyman and favorite student of Albrecht Dürer. After successfully completing his time as an apprentice, Baldung returned to Strasbourg, where he received the citizenship in 1509.

During the subsequent years Hans Baldung worked in Strasbourg, Switzerland, Alsace and Freiburg in Breisgau as a painter and copperplate engraver. He produced his most important work, the large high altar of the cathedral of Freiburg between 1512 and 1516.

Alongside this high altar, about 100 further paintings by Hans Baldung survive, which show him as a master, who understands how to take completely new paths of coloration and lend the traditional motifs of his pictures idyllic, fairytale-like and sometimes demonic character. His female figures often appear as seductive allegories.

In 1553 Baldung returned to Strasbourg, where he was appointed court painter and member of the High Council. In September 1545 Baldung died in Strasbourg, a wealthy and highly acclaimed man.

Hans Baldung is one of the most important painters and printmakers and, second only to Albrecht Dürer and Hans Holbein, is one of the most productive artists of the 16th century.
