Laurie Anderson é diplomada em história da arte e escultura. Desde os anos 1970 vem realizando performances em New York especificamente no espaço intermidia chamado The Kitchen.

Em 1981, grava o disco "O Superman (For Massenet)". O disco é apreciado e relançado pelo influente "branché" da mídia inglesa, e se torna um sucesso, chegando a segunda posição nas paradas inglesas. O sucesso a faz sair do estatuto de artista "avant-garde" e lhe oferece uma notoriedade entre artistas mais populares.  Seus temas prediletos dizem respeito à tecnologia e seus efeitos sobre as relações humanas.

Esposa de Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson vive hoje em Nova Iorque.

Laura Phillips "Laurie" Anderson (born June 5, 1947) is an American experimental performance artist and musician who plays violin and keyboards and sings in a variety of experimental music and art rock styles. Initially trained as a sculptor, Anderson did her first performance-art piece in the late 1960s. She became widely known outside the art world in 1981 when her single "O Superman" reached number two on the UK pop charts.

Anderson married longtime companion Lou Reed.

Laurie Anderson est diplômée en histoire de l'art et en sculpture. Dès les années 1970 elle réalise des performances à New York, dont certaines seront reprises dans ses œuvres ultérieures. En 1981, elle enregistre un single O Superman (For Massenet). Le disque est apprécié et relayé par un John Peel, c'est un succès important, puisque le single parvient à la deuxième position des charts anglais. Ce succès l'a fait sortir d'un statut d'artiste « avant-garde » et lui a procuré un début de notoriété en France.

Ses thèmes de prédilection concernent la technologie et ses effets sur les relations humaines.

Le 12 avril 2008, Laurie Anderson a épousé son compagnon de longue date, l'ancien leader du Velvet Underground Lou Reed.
