ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT

All Quiet on the Western Front, Nada de Novo no Front (título no Brasil) ou A Oeste Nada de Novo (título em Portugal) é um drama de guerra estadunidense de 1930, dirigido por Lewis Milestone. É uma adaptação cinematográfica do romance pacifista Im Westen nichts Neues de Erich Maria Remarque sobre a I Guerra Mundial. Um jovem soldado vê as suas ilusões profundamente esmagadas com o horror da Primeira Guerra Mundial. No elenco estão, entre outros, Lew Ayres, Louis Wolheim, John Wray e Arnold Lucy.

O filme foi proibido na Itália até 1956. Durante muito tempo só a versão de 105 minutos estava disponível, mas entre 1980 a 1990 o filme foi completamente restaurado. A versão de 130 minutos está disponível em vídeo.

As frases "A oeste nada de novo", em Portugal, e "Nada de novo no front", no Brasil, se tornaram gíria popular para se referir a uma ausência total de ação, em referência a falsa guerra na frente ocidental da Primeira Guerra Mundial.

A canção Na Rodoviária, de Raul Seixas, faz uma homenagem ao filme citando seu nome em versão brasileira.

En 1916, des lycéens allemands, poussés par leur professeur, s'enrôlent comme volontaires : ils subissent un dur entraînement et sont envoyés au front où ils se trouvent en proie à la vermine, à la maladie, à la faim et à la peur. Lors d'une permission, le lieutenant Baumer contredit la rhétorique patriotique de son ancien professeur en expliquant aux élèves l'atrocité et l'absurdité de cette guerre. De retour au front, il est tué en voulant attraper un papillon sur le rebord de la tranchée.

Milestone décrit les horreurs de la guerre avec réalisme, mais aussi un grand souffle épique dans d'impressionnants mouvements de caméra. Le plus fameux est un long travelling latéral sur l'assaut des fantassins français décimés devant les barbelés par les mitrailleuses. En dénonçant le dévoiement du patriotisme, en suggérant la fraternité des combattants des deux camps, il a réalisé un authentique film pacifiste.

This is an English language film (made in America) adapted from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque. The film follows a group of German schoolboys, talked into enlisting at the beginning of World War 1 by their jingoistic teacher. The story is told entirely through the experiences of the young German recruits and highlights the tragedy of war through the eyes of individuals. As the boys witness death and mutilation all around them, any preconceptions about "the enemy" and the "rights and wrongs" of the conflict disappear, leaving them angry and bewildered. This is highlighted in the scene where Paul mortally wounds a French soldier and then weeps bitterly as he fights to save his life while trapped in a shell crater with the body. The film is not about heroism but about drudgery and futility and the gulf between the concept of war and the actuality.
